Journey of the Divine is Here!

Yay! Journey of the Divine, the third in the Shadow Fan Series, is out! It will be FREE August 1st- 3rd. I’m so excited for the third installment of the series. This is where we see Kai try to overcome the great differences between himself and Yoshino, the Mountain Spirit.

The sword on the cover is the key to wake the last living dragon, and the golden fruit is, well, explosive. But to Yoshino it’s just a pleasant tickle to her throat! This story is packed with a huge battle against Yokai and Oni, and a confrontation with Yoshino’s ex-boyfriend. Oh, and we mustn’t forget Tomo the Mushi! He needs a little saving himself in this tale. Not to mention the majestic dragon making his debut. Happy reading, all!

To Never Run Out of Ideas…

I would love it if I never ran out of ideas. I can read some books by the same author and know exactly how it’s going to end by the 20th page. There are others that I have no clue what’s coming around the bend. I love that!

I always struggle to give my readers a great story. Usually this happens by turning the story over to the characters. Basically letting my imagination run free. But then I go back and compare. Often times I’ll harass myself about scenes that may be too familiar. I don’t want to be too “Lord of the Rings-ish,” or too “Harry Potter-ish,” and I have really got to stop giving EVERYBODY wings!

book and lightbulb

It’s very important for me to create something unique, even if the inspiration came form a T.V. show, movie or other author’s work. I’m a reader, too, and I don’t want to read a copy of something that’s already out there! That’s why I’m so impressed with many of my peer’s works! I wonder how they can be on their 20th book, and still have me guessing every time I get into their stories. I want to be like that!

The Shadow Fan Series

This book got delayed a little, but It’s finally coming out this month and I’m so excited. I’ve been working on the Shadow Fan Series series for a while and I love the characters. This is one of those stories where I have no clue what’s gonna happen next as I write. The characters wrote this series, and I was just along for the ride.

stone wall with hole

I love myths and legends of old, and that’s where these stories draw breath from. But these are not the usual myths of Greek legend. These are myths and legends of Japanese lore. I make no secret that I’m a bit of a child. I love anime (Japanese animation/cartoons). But I also love their versions of trickster spirits and demons of despair. They play a large part in this series, so I figured you might want to meet some of them.

Japanese woman

Yoshino is a spirit who resides in the Boarder Lands, or the place between this world and the next. She keeps the balance of a particular mountain in her world and ours, and she’s very good at her job. She appears as a young woman, and is extremely powerful. He emotions play a vital role in the health of the mountain and all who live there. So you see, if she were to fall in love… well, that could throw a wrench into the workings of her mountain 🙂

Fun Stuff Happening!

Yesterday I was very excited to attend the book signing for new author Brooklyn Ann. It went very well, and she sold a ton of books. If you like regency and vampires, you might want to pick up a copy of Bite Me, Your Grace!

A Writer’s Unique Voice

Tomorrow I’m giving an interactive class on literary voice At the Idaho Writer’s League in Coeur D’ Alene.

Book and pen

Many people have a difficult time finding their writer’s voice. Your voice on the page should be as unique as your own manner of speaking. If you are a quiet, gentle person your voice should reflect that on the page. Your writing may feel light and airy. While a dark and brooding person will be able to lock you in their world with their stong and emotional tones.

Light vs Dark_web II

I enjoy both styles of writing, as long as it takes me to a world where I can escape to! Tomorrow I’ll be helping people to recognize what a literary voice is, and hopefully understanding that finding your own voice is akin to finding (and knowing) your own inner self.

Thank You River City!

I just returned form a morning of talks with the students of River City Middle School.  I was so impressed with how many students were interested in writing or had already begun to write a novel! What a blast. Thanks for not falling asleep on me! Maybe it helped that I threw candy at the kids. Oh, and I’m really sorry I hit that one girl in the head with chocolate, but I did repay her in candy 🙂 No concussion I think.

Writing is such a solitary act, but I’m more of a people person, so I was happy to get out of the house. Some of my favorite questions were-

How many books have you written total? This gave me pause. I had to stop and count everything I’ve written that has, and has not gotten published yet. The total right now is nine. This includes shorts, novellas and novels.

What is your favorite anime? This question was asked after I revealed I get much of my inspiration from anime/manga and music. My favorite animes are Sword Art Online, Bleach,  Shippuden, Blood Plus, Kamisama Kiss Inuyasha and Full Metal Alchemist. There are a BUNCH more, but It would fill this whole post, so I’ll stop here.

Would you ever write about werewolves? The answer was probably not. I love werewolves, but like vampires, that market is saturated. Vampires, werewolves, angels and demons have been real big the last few years. Last year zombies came into the mix. If I did write about a werewolf It wold likely be a side character in a larger story.

I’ll be teaching again next Wed. at Idaho Writer’s League on “Your Unique Writing Voice.”  And in April I’ll be presenting a workshop (with fellow RWA members) at the Get Lit! festival in Spokane about world building.  Hope to see you there!

The Month of Love

I ran into this on facebook and had to share it. Happy Valentines day everyone 🙂

You should date a girl who reads.

Date a girl who reads. Date a girl who spends her money on books instead of clothes, who has problems with closet space because she has too many books. Date a girl who has a list of books she wants to read, who has had a library card since she was twelve.

book-sculpture-01

Find a girl who reads. You’ll know that she does because she will always have an unread book in her bag. She’s the one lovingly looking over the shelves in the bookstore, the one who quietly cries out when she has found the book she wants. You see that weird chick sniffing the pages of an old book in a secondhand book shop? That’s the reader. They can never resist smelling the pages, especially when they are yellow and worn.

She’s the girl reading while waiting in that coffee shop down the street. If you take a peek at her mug, the non-dairy creamer is floating on top because she’s kind of engrossed already. Lost in a world of the author’s making. Sit down. She might give you a glare, as most girls who read do not like to be interrupted.

Ask her if she likes the book.

Buy her another cup of coffee.
tumblr_lu98vtXGO81qdbj3no1_500
Let her know what you really think of Murakami. See if she got through the first chapter of Fellowship. Understand that if she says she understood James Joyce’s Ulysses she’s just saying that to sound intelligent. Ask her if she loves Alice or she would like to be Alice.

It’s easy to date a girl who reads. Give her books for her birthday, for Christmas, for anniversaries. Give her the gift of words, in poetry and in song. Let her know that you understand that words are love. Understand that she knows the difference between books and reality but by gosh, she’s going to try to make her life a little like her favorite book. It will never be your fault if she does.

She has to give it a shot somehow.

Lie to her. If she understands syntax, she will understand your need to lie. Behind words are other things: motivation, value, nuance, dialogue. It will not be the end of the world.

Fail her. Because a girl who reads knows that failure always leads up to the climax. Because girls who read understand that all things must come to end, but that you can always write a sequel. That you can begin again and again and still be the hero. That life is meant to have a villain or two.

Why be frightened of everything that you are not? Girls who read understand that people, like characters, develop.

If you find a girl who reads, keep her close. When you find her up at 2 AM clutching a book to her chest and weeping, make her a cup of tea and hold her. You may lose her for a couple of hours but she will always come back to you. She’ll talk as if the characters in the book are real, because for a while, they always are.

You will propose on a hot air balloon. Or during a rock concert. Or very casually next time she’s sick. Over Skype.

You will smile so hard you will wonder why your heart hasn’t burst and bled out all over your chest yet. You will write the story of your lives, have kids with strange names and even stranger tastes. She will introduce your children to the Cat in the Hat and Aslan, maybe in the same day. You will walk the winters of your old age together and she will recite Keats under her breath while you shake the snow off your boots.

Date a girl who reads because you deserve it. You deserve a girl who can give you the most colorful life imaginable. If you can only give her monotony, and stale hours and half-baked proposals, then you’re better off alone. If you want the world and the worlds beyond it, date a girl who reads.

Or better yet, date a girl who writes.”

Making a Myth Your Own

I love myths and legends. Much of my inspiration comes from these old tales. Working myths into fantasy or paranormal writing is a fun way to add onto a world that’s already been created. The question after that is, do you keep the rules of the world, or break them?

Me personally, I like to stick to the original rules as much as possible. But if a really great idea comes up I might bend the rules a touch to make them work for my characters. Recently I’ve been working on a collection of stories based off of Japanese myths, and boy do they have some fantastic ones!

My new thing is writing what comes next. After the end of the myth or legend what happened to the kids, the town, the bad guy? I love carrying on a favorite story that would otherwise have ended. One of those is the tale of the Tiger and the Dragon. In Asian myths when the tiger wanted all power to himself he went up against the dragon. But after a long battle the two realized they were equally matched. They would forever have to share power, and they hated each other for it.

I wonder what their kids would have gone through? Would this be a Romeo and Juliet ending or would the kids follow in their parents footsteps? Actually my muse came up with a third option, which will be included in the Shadow Fan series, soon to release. I’ll be sure to share more as the story unfolds. For now, enjoy those good old tales.

Great Review For Gargoyle!

I’m thrilled to share a little of the great review from Reese’s Reviews. If you want to read the full post hop over to – http://reesesreviews.blogspot.com/ And enter to win a free copy!

Reeses reviews

Elizabeta was an amazing character to read. She was easily relatable, especially when she was feeling all flustered when she was around Aelius. Elizabeta had a lot to learn about herself throughout the novel and I liked that she wasn’t perfect. She also liked scheming a lot which was awesome, one of the best scenes in the book! Aelius was hot is every sense of the word. He had the perfect body and was quite humorous himself at times, even though I don’t think he meant to be. He had a great sense of justice when it came to protecting Elizabeta and bringing justice to those who would seek to harm her. The honestly made a perfect couple!
Overall, Gargoyle is an amazing read. It is extremely original like none I’ve ever read. The lengths Elizabeta and Aelius were willing to go through to be together was amazing. They both grew as characters throughout the book which was awesome. There was always something going on in the story and I was always left guessing what would happen next. I hope you pick up a copy of this amazing book ASAP!
Favorite Quote: “My uncle started that little lie. It’s amazing you believed him.”

“Oh, I didn’t believe him. The Headmaster ordered me, and your other teachers, to keep an eye out for definitive proof. And now we have it, and this whole stupid thing is over. That’s all.”

“I hope so, Mr. Chevalier. Because, if you wanted to see something other than what I possess, I’d say you need to leave this island immediately and find yourself a wife.” Did I really just say that?! First I fall on him, crack his skull a good one, now I’m insulting him? What’s wrong with me?

He burst out laughing. He bent forward and slapped the water. “That’s more like it, Erro. That’s the spirit! Why aren’t you like that with the boys in class?”

My brow drew together. I insult him, and he thinks it’s funny? There’s a lot more I need to learn about men, it seems.

Rating: 4.5

Thank you Reese’s Reviews!
