Insane Holiday Months…

Starting in October the holidays never cease to drown me in craziness. On top of that I had two book releases, Gargoyle ebook in October and the Print release in November.

November also held another release for me, Spirit Tracks. It’s a little short for $.99 featuring Arch the Assassin Lord and Richelle, the one woman he’s made a bargain never to go near. Problem is his new target found out that little bit of information, and has been lurking near her.

Richelle has known Arch for many years, but when she stated to fall in love with him as a teenager, he suddenly stopped coming around. Now that she’s back in the area she’s run into her neighbor, who looks remarkably like her crush from years ago. Only, it looks as if he never aged. But her life takes a sharp change when she finds a dead body outside her bedroom window, along with the injured neighbor.

Spirit Tracks will be randomly free throughout December if you’re interested. Hope the beginning of winter is warm and comfy where ever you may be 🙂

Gargoyle’s Revenge

Aelius the gargoyle is very protective of his creator, master and love, Elizabeta. From drawing first breath he’s wants revenge on the kids bulling her at school.  The only reason he holds back is because Elizabeta instructs him to.  But when he is finally unleashed, people lose their shoes, their eyebrows and their dignity.

I have to admit, I’ve never been a prankster, though I have wanted to get revenge on a few choice individuals… But it’s been a long time now.  I was surprised at some of the things Aelius does, especially when he tied that sleeping kid to the top of the tree.  Too bad the kid slept in the nude… He’s even willing to go so far as to kill to keep his Elizabeta safe.

I couldn’t imagine waking up at the top of a tree, or with no eyebrows, or to farm animals eating my clothes. Yeah, I’ll leave that up to my Gargoyle. What about you? Are you a prankster like Aelius?

Gargoyle Book Release!

I’m so excited Gargoyle is officially out! Here’s another excerpt to celebrate.

“Mr. Riemma!”  I turned to see Mr. Chevalier striding toward me, his robes dramatically swishing behind him.

My hand released the door handle to my room.  “What is it, sir?”

With a smile, he stopped in front of me.  “I wanted to bring this to you personally.”  The white envelope he held up had a wax seal with a pressed stamp mark in the middle.  “It’s a letter from the King.”

My shoulders drooped.  “Ugh. Not another one.”

His brow drew together as he handed it to me. “You’ve received letters from the King before?”

Nodding, I pushed open my door.  “When we were children my sister and I used to play at the palace while the King and my father went hunting.  Every year he invites me to court.”

Mr. Chevalier stood in the doorway as I entered my room.  “And you turn him down?”

I nodded as I ripped open the seal. “Oh, sorry. You may come in.” I slyly glanced over at the balcony doors to make sure they were shut.  There was still about an hour before Aelius would wake up.  It was a little unnerving to have Mr. Chevalier, with his lips and eyebrows like Aelius, standing in my room.

He respectfully closed the door behind him.  Unfolding the letter, I read the neat handwriting out loud. “Dear Erro Riemma, as I have tried on numerous occasions to get you to the palace, it has occurred to me that you are obviously too busy tending to your inheritance.  You have increased in wealth, and I am impressed that you have fared so well in light of your family’s passing.  Since I know you are not able to come to me, I hereby grant you the title of Erro Riemma, Duke of Caserta…”  I blinked and shook my head, my voice trailing off. I looked up to Mr. Chevalier’s wide eyes, then back to the parchment again.  “Did I read that right?” I held it out to him.

He took it with curiosity and re-read the lines.  “I hereby grant you the title of Erro Riemma, Duke of Caserta.  Please visit me at the palace the next chance you get.  It would be good to see how you are these days.  Sincerely, Umberto Savoy, King of Italy.”

He handed the paper back.  I read the letter through once more.  I couldn’t believe it. I was a Duke.  Just like that.  And I was only eighteen . How did this happen?

“Your Grace.” Mr. Chevalier’s voice pulled me from the astonishment to see him in a stately bow next to me, with his hand over his heart.  Oh my goodness, he and Aelius even bowed the same!

I blew out a deep breath.  “Mr. Chevalier, I’ll donate a large sum of money to the arts department if you never do that again.”

He stood from his bow with an evil grin on his lips.  “Not a chance, your Grace.  It is my duty to report to the Headmaster the standing of every student under his care.  The teachers must address you appropriately.”  I rolled my eyes.  “Why are you running from this Erro?  I mean, your Grace?”

I tossed the letter on my desk.  “I don’t want people to respect me because of some title.  I want the boys here to stop picking on me because of my character.  Plus, this is Lorella’s doing.”

He shook his head at me, still smiling at me.  “How long has it been since you’ve had a confrontation?  Not since you broke Damaso’s nose, right?”

I thought back, trying to find an incident in my memory that had happened after I’d stood up for myself.  But I couldn’t find one, because it hadn’t happened.  I had to nod in agreement

“That was four months ago.   And then there was those mysterious happenings to the more unruly children here.”  His smile quirked.  “ The animals in the rooms, the furniture, the boy with the blue ink mustache… Those events seemed to seal your safety for all eternity as far as I’m concerned.  This title won’t make them respect you more, you’ve done that on your own.”

Had it really been that long since I’d had those problems?  Time seemed to fly since Aelius had come into my life.

Mr. Chevalier’s head cocked to the side with a sudden scowl.  “Who’s Lorella?”

“My fiancé.”  I wanted to die.  “The King’s great-niece.  She was often there while everyone went hunting. We’ve been betrothed since she was born.  I think she’s one year younger than me.  And I believe she’s part of the reason the King always remembers to invite me to Court.  I’m sure she intends to inspect me.”

“Well, you’ve grown lately, your Grace.  I’m sure she won’t have anything bad to say about her fiancé.”

I groaned.  “Believe me, Mr. Chevalier, I’m not ready for this marriage.  I wish I could find some way around it.”

He smiled broadly.  “I’ve heard that from friends before.  And their wives always do them good.  Give her a chance.  It’s not like she’s a complete stranger.”

I numbly fell into my desk chair.  “I’m sure you’re right, teacher.” Only I’d like to be the wife in a relationship, I thought dryly.

Then my thoughts came crashing down as reality sunk in.  I was a Duke now.  The highest rank next to royalty.  Dressing above one’s station was a huge offense, let alone the fact that I wasn’t Erro.  There would be no mercy on me if anyone found out I was a girl.

Please give me a few days after the contest ends to announce the winner. Thank you, and please enjoy this extended excerpt from Gargoyle!

The only male figure I’d ever created filled me with pride.

“Now, what to call you?” The full moonlight glinted off his flawless face. “Something ancient, Roman maybe.” I used the damp rag to wipe the dust from his jaw. “Aelius… What do you think?” His gentle features looked down at me, accepting and understanding. I ran my thumb over his full lower lip. I had secretly studied many lips of the young men at this school to be able to create the perfect mouth. The mouth I would most like to kiss.

But I would never get to kiss lips like those, since I was pretending to be a boy.

I dared to pull myself up another few centimeters. No one lingered below. The hour was well past curfew. My breath reflected off his marble face as I turned my head ever so slightly to the side.  He was only a statue, and therefore I knew his lips would be cold and unyielding. But I was mistaken…

I discovered warm, soft lips when I pressed mine to his.

Then they gave a bit.

And then they kissed back.

The impossible yanked me back in surprise. The thought I had lost my mind was swallowed by fear as I lost my balance.  Gravity pulled me from the ledge.

As I fell backward my eyes locked with his. Dark and full of wonder, they beheld me. I reached out for him as I slipped farther away.  The muscles my hands had carved flexed in motion. Black wings sliced through the air as he lunged forward, his slender fingers grasping for mine. My falling body abruptly came to a stop, muscles pulling as I dangled from the gargoyle’s hand.

The warm, soft lips I had just kissed smiled. “Are you all right, my master?”

Confusion flooded my mind. A gargoyle was talking to me as I hung several meters away from broken bones or death. Was I crazy? Or sleeping? Perhaps my classmates were playing another prank on me.  Had they dosed my food with laudanum? Either way, I had to get down before anyone saw me.

“Uh… just help me down, please!”

He swiftly pulled me to him and caught me midair. I braced myself as his arms encircled me and drew my body to his chest. I thought I would meet the impact of cold stone. But his expansive chest radiated heat as warm as his lips. Those agile muscles had lost the coldness of marble. My figure came to rest against smooth flesh. His legs were hidden from view by a simple white wrap as he stood us up. His great leather wings unfurled and gracefully moved against the wind, to drop us down onto the balcony.

My trembling hands grasped his shoulders.  As the gargoyle straightened, he looked down at me. His pale arms held together my sanity. Black spices mixed with oak and vanilla filled my senses as I panted against him. The fragrance was heavenly.  Then I realized the tantalizing scent was him.  My rattled senses finally tore me from utopia. Taking pleasure in the arms of a monster was absurd. This could not be happening.

If you like the excerpt Gargoyle is available now from Pink Petal Books right now-

Halloween + Book Release = A Great Spooky Season

I was so excited when I found out Gargoyle was coming out for Halloween. I mean, he is a monster. And tis the season to celebrate monsters! Well, he’s the hero, too. So I guess he’s not all that spooky.

But Aelius the gargoyle certainly has his moments. At least he’s gentlemanly enough to ask if he can kill someone before actual bloodshed… Well, most of the time 🙂  He can get a little short-tempered when people threaten his maker, and object of affection, Elizabeta.  But Elizabeta can be just as protective of her gargoyle.

Are there any monsters that are the object of your respect or affection? In fantasy I would have to say vampires are still one of my favorites, but I’ve always wanted to see the Loch Ness Monster, too.

Unexpected Release News

I heard from my publisher this week that Spirit Tracks, my first short, will be releasing around the same time as Gargoyle! The fun thing with the shorts is they are going to be free for a time. In October if you subscribe to the Pink Petal newsletter you will get a free short story with it. After that first month it will go to Amazon, available for Free for the fist three months.

I love the idea of free. This way people can “test drive” my writing style to see if they want to shell out the money for Wingless or Gargoyle. Although Gargoyle (to me) is an epic tale, Wingless is more on the mild side.  And I think Spirit Tracks settles in the middle of the two quite comfortably.

Thanks for stopping in and I’ll continue to post an update and other fun stuff!

New Series

I’ve been off the grid, sorry all.  If you haven’t noticed, I do that some times.  These are the times when I’m lost in my writing worlds.  I’ve gotten quite a bit done, however.  I’m almost finished with the second in the Shadow Fan series.  I love how it’s turning out, and I hope my fans will as well.

Months ago I entered the series into a state contest.  I’m so excited to see if it places.  The results will come at the end of September.  Thank goodness it looks like I’m not running against any other authors I know.  Several of them entered the state contest, just not the same category. I’ll let you all know as soon as I find out anything! Have a great day 🙂

Wingless on Amazon!

I’m excited to announce Wingless is now on Amazon.  I was thrilled to see it out in the Big Pond.  To celebrate I’m posting an excerpt.  Enjoy!

“Ah-ha! Here we are.”  Nathan veered off the walking trail a bit onto a dirt path.  “This way,” he motioned.

“We’re going off-road, huh?”  She held both of her arms out for balance as she slowly made her way down the rough path.

“Here, let me help you down this part.  It’s a little tricky.”  She let him take her wrist as they inched down a couple of large boulders to another rock that jutted out over the cliff.

“This is beautiful,” she breathed as he released her wrist.  Settling down into a crouch, she gazed at the pinks and oranges of the setting sun.  “You can see the whole city from up here.”

“Yeah.” He settled down next to her. “If we wait long enough, the evening lights will start to come on.”  He glanced at her as she marveled over the view.  “I come here often to think about things.”

“You mean to escape all your other girlfriends?” She giggled.

“Oh yeah.  It’s torture.”  He ran his hand through his sandy hair, slowly.  “It’s hard looking like Brad Pitt.  Everyone wants you for your body.  And there’s only one of me.”

April almost spit out the ball of cotton candy she’d just put in her mouth.  “I hadn’t realized how lucky I am to actually get another date with you.  Praise the heavens! The planets must be aligned perfectly for this fortuitous night.”

He winked at her.  “You know it.  That’s why I’ve showered you with these expensive gifts.  I mean the flowers alone cost me the amount of these Old Navy pants, which I’ll have to wash now…”

“And the bear was at the high price of your throwing shoulder,” she pointed out.  “That must have cost a fortune.”

“Well, yeah. It’s my good shoulder, after all.”  April’s giggle added color to her lightly freckled cheeks.  Her lemony scent drew his attention to her features.  He wanted to nuzzle his face in her neck to see if her skin tasted like lemon drops. Or maybe it was her lips…

Between the wild daisies and the blue puff of cotton candy, he leaned into her.  His eyes closed as her mouth met his.  Tender movements of her soft lips stirred him from within.  He wanted this woman.  From the moment she’d walked into photography class, he’d wanted her.  And now she was right here.

His eyes opened a slit to see if she was enjoying their kiss as much as he was when he saw Luke standing off to the right, leaning up against a tree. Watching them.

What the?  He pulled out of the kiss.  But when he looked back at the tree, there was no one there.

“Is something wrong?”  April’s brow pulled together as she looked over her shoulder.

“Uh, no.”  He shook his head.  “Last week’s finals have sucked out the remainder of my brain.  I think I’m seeing things.”

“Oh yeah?”  She raised her eyebrows.  “Was it your stalking girl-fans, Brad Pitt?”

Nathan chuckled.  “No. But it did remind me of something.  Can you tell Luke thank you for me?  I was such an idiot when he fixed my handheld. I just stared at him dumbly after he saved my bacon.”

“Luke? Right.”  April’s forehead creased.  “What did he look like?”

Nathan shrugged.  “I don’t know.  Brown hair with a middle part, blue eyes.  Um, I think he was wearing a white button-up, gray suit and silver tie.  Is that an accurate enough description, Miss Investigator?”  But the smile on his lips vanished when he saw the look on her face.  All of the delicate blush of her skin drained away to a ghostly white.

“You saw him?” She stood up.

“Uh, yeah.” He rose too.

The urgency grew in her voice.  “When?  Where? What did he say?”

Nathan scratched the back of his neck.  Oh, great.  He’d just stepped onto a land mine.  “It was last week at the coffee shop.  He told me he was a friend of yours. That’s all.”

“Did he say anything else?”

Good God, the poor girl looked like she was about to burst into tears.  “He just asked if I would be your friend. And then he left. That’s all.”  He watched her eyes work back and forth as she thought about his words.  “Look, did this guy do something to you?  Because if he did I promise you—”

“No, no.”  She shook her head vigorously.  Her voice was much softer when she spoke again.  “It’s exactly the opposite of that, actually.”

After a moment of trying to figure the complex little creature out in front of him, he gave up.  “I’m confused.”

She sighed.  “It’s my fault. I’m sorry.”  She looked back over the city as the lights started to come on.  “I don’t think I’m going to be very good company the rest of the night.”  She wrapped her arms around herself.  “I should probably just go home.”

“Of course, if you want to…”  Nathan hated to say the words.  He wanted her to stay with him, but he didn’t want to push her. Leave it to him to say something that would ruin an incredible night.

However, he did want to find out exactly who this “Luke” was.
